Our story
We moved to the Forest of Dean in 2015, ready to embrace the fresh air, peace and lush green views of the area having both grown up in rural settings. When searching for a place to call home, we were often viewing rustic cottages - charming on the outside but dark and damp on the inside - so were finally taken by the big windows, light and views of a classic 70’s bungalow and the wraparound terraced gardens. We knew from the beginning that we wanted to create something special and invite people to share in the beauty you can experience here by simply sitting and enjoying the views.
As it was for many, the lockdowns of 2020/21 were a catalyst for change. This is when Nuthatch began to take shape. We wished to create a unique space for guests, unlike many others that can be found in the area and on the holiday market in general. A retreat that would be characterful, warm, accessible and inviting. A holiday home with soul and sustainable credentials. One that would be a nod to the artists we’ve met over the years, encompassing our enduring love of foliage, meaningful objects and beautiful textures. A place that celebrates the creativity, beauty and food of the Forest of Dean and the wider Wye Valley and Gloucestershire region.

Nuthatch Retreat is the collaborative result of Nemia and Rod thinking about every detail, each encounter in the space. How everything looks, feels, tastes. Thinking about what happens on gorgeous summer evenings and rainy winter Sundays, for grown-up couples, tired workers and curious children.
